A mural activation turns a wall into a brand experience. It’s a high-visibility, on-brand piece of art built to engage an audience, spark social content, and bring a campaign to life, in whatever form fits your goals. We partner with brands and marketing teams across Los Angeles to design and produce mural activations people actually stop for.
Recent activations include a live mural for Optima Batteries inside its sponsor camp at King of the Hammers, the BonFire Ventures afterparty for the Upfront Summit and the Toastique Downtown Los Angeles opening. Projects start at $7,500.

What is a mural activation?
“Activation” is marketing shorthand for an experience that brings a brand to life. A mural activation does exactly that with paint: a custom, large-scale mural deployed as part of a campaign, launch, event or space. It is experiential, it is photogenic, and unlike most ad formats, people want to engage with it. Depending on the objective, that can look like a permanent statement wall, a pop-up moment, a hand-painted street ad or a live painting performance.
Why brands use murals
Reach and impressions. A well-placed mural works around the clock and racks up street-level and social impressions for years, not for the length of a flight.
Content and UGC. Every mural is a backdrop people photograph and share. The painting of it is content too, which is why live painting and timelapse capture are built into so many activations.
Foot traffic and dwell time. Activations pull people in and keep them there. A wall people cross the street for is a different asset from one they scroll past.
Authenticity. Hand-painted work carries a credibility printed media does not, especially with younger audiences who tune out conventional advertising.
A lasting asset. The campaign ends; the mural and the content it generated keep working.
The forms mural marketing can take
Not every activation is the same. We shape it around the campaign:
Branded statement walls. An on-brand, highly shareable mural designed to be photographed and tagged. Built-in user-generated content.
Pop-up and retail activations. Murals tied to a launch, a pop-up, a store or an experiential space, often on a compressed timeline.
Hand-painted advertising. Large-scale hand-painted wall ads in high-traffic areas: the high-impact, street-credible alternative to vinyl and billboards.
Live mural painting. Painting in real time at an event as a performance and a content moment. See live painting for brands for formats and logistics.
Interactive and campaign tie-ins. Hashtags, sponsorships, guest participation and experiential elements layered onto the artwork.
Hand-painted advertising: the wall as the ad
The oldest form of outdoor advertising is having a comeback for a simple reason: a hand-painted wall is content in a way a printed billboard is not. People photograph the painting happening, the finished wall and themselves in front of it, and the brand gets a run of organic posts a static board never generates.
Two practical notes for a Los Angeles campaign. A hand-painted ad on an exterior wall is regulated as signage, not as a mural, so the wall needs the right sign approval rather than the Original Art Mural process, and that is worth confirming before a media plan is built around a location. And timing works differently from print: a wall takes days to paint and can be repainted for the next flight, so a single leased wall can carry a sequence of campaigns. Our page on hand-painted advertising in Los Angeles covers the sign rules, the three ways to get a painted wall, and costs.
How the process works
Most activations reach us from an in-house brand or marketing team with a campaign already in motion, and we are built to slot into that. Send the brief, the brand guidelines, the location or venue and the date. We return concept directions, lock the design with your creative lead, and handle production: surface, materials, permits where needed, painting and the reveal. If content capture is part of the plan, we schedule the painting so the best moments land when your crew is there.
The same activation can be delivered in more than one city. Recent walls have gone up in Los Angeles, Orange County, Riverside and Abilene, Texas, and for larger campaigns we travel nationally.
Timeline
A branded interior wall or a live piece can turn around in two to four weeks including design. An exterior wall inside the City of Los Angeles takes longer because of permitting: allow two to three months from brief to finished wall. That lead time is the single most common reason an activation misses its campaign window, so it is the first thing we check when a brief comes in.
What an activation costs
Activations are quoted per project with a minimum engagement of $7,500. A live-painted piece or a single branded statement wall usually sits near the minimum; hand-painted ad walls and multi-site programs go upward from there depending on scale, location and how many walls are in the plan. Design development is part of the project. Our 2026 pricing guide covers what drives cost across all of our work.
Mural activation questions
What exactly is a mural activation?
A mural used as a brand activation: an experiential, high-visibility marketing asset. It can be a statement wall, a pop-up piece, hand-painted advertising or live painting, permanent or temporary, depending on the campaign.
Do you work with in-house brand teams?
Yes. Most of our activation work comes from in-house brand and marketing teams. Send the brief, guidelines, location and date, and we slot into your campaign timeline from concept through production.
Can it match our campaign branding?
Completely. Concept, colors, message and logo are built around your brief. On a permanent exterior wall in the City of Los Angeles, a commercial message moves the wall into sign rules rather than mural rules, which we flag at the brief stage.
Permanent or temporary?
Either. Permanent installations, temporary campaign walls that are repainted for the next flight, or event-based activations on panels that travel afterward.
Do we need a permit for a branded wall in Los Angeles?
Interiors and event panels, no. An exterior wall inside the City of Los Angeles does: original artwork goes through the Original Art Mural registration, and artwork carrying a commercial message is treated as signage with its own approval. Our permit guide explains both paths.
How much does a mural activation cost?
From $7,500. A live piece or a single statement wall usually sits near the minimum, and hand-painted ad walls and multi-site programs go upward from there. Every activation is quoted individually.
How far in advance should we brief you?
Two to four weeks for an interior wall or a live piece. Two to three months for an exterior wall inside the City of Los Angeles, because of permitting. The earlier the location is confirmed, the more options there are.
Where do you work?
Los Angeles and across Southern California, with recent walls in Orange County, Riverside and Abilene, Texas, and nationally for larger campaigns.

Activations on exterior walls have a permitting path of their own. See the Los Angeles mural permit guide, especially the section on commercial messages.
