Almost everything written about this comparison online was written by companies that sell vinyl. We paint murals, so we have our own bias, and the honest way to handle that is to tell you exactly when vinyl is the better choice. There are real cases where it is. There are also claims made about hand-painted work in those articles that do not survive contact with a properly finished wall.
The comparison, straight
| Hand-painted mural | Vinyl wall wrap | |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cost | Higher. Priced by the project, from $7,500. | Lower, often meaningfully so on large flat interior walls. |
| Speed | Days to weeks of on-site work. | Printed off site, installed in hours. |
| Lifespan outdoors | 10 to 20 years when sealed properly. | Typically quoted at 5 to 7 years before fading or lifting. |
| Surface it needs | Works on brick, stucco, block, metal, concrete, curved and textured walls. | Needs a smooth, clean, flat surface to adhere reliably. |
| If it gets tagged | With an anti-graffiti coating, the tag washes off and the artwork stays. | The panel is usually replaced. |
| Repairs | Damage is retouched in place by the artist. | Sections are reprinted and reinstalled, with color-match risk across batches. |
| How it reads | Made for that wall. Visible brushwork and scale people photograph. | Reads as printed graphics up close, especially at seams. |
| Reproducible | One of one. | Reprintable across many locations, identically. |
When vinyl is genuinely the right call
We turn down work that should be vinyl, because a badly matched format makes everyone look bad. Choose the wrap when:
- The graphic has to be identical across many sites. Forty franchise locations need the same artwork on the same wall. That is a printing job, not an art commission.
- It is coming down in a few months. Short campaigns, seasonal windows, temporary retail. Nobody should pay for a hand-painted wall they intend to remove.
- The deadline is days away. Print and install genuinely beats painting on speed.
- The artwork is a photograph or exact brand asset that must reproduce pixel-perfect, with no interpretation.
- The budget is genuinely small. If the budget is well below our minimum, a wrap done well beats a mural done cheap. We would rather tell you that than take the job.
Three claims worth correcting
“Painted murals need constant touch-ups and repaints.” This describes a mural painted with ordinary wall paint and no protective finish. An exterior mural painted with UV-resistant exterior-grade product and sealed with a proper clear coat holds its color for a decade or more with no maintenance beyond an occasional wash. The maintenance problem being described is a specification problem.
“Vinyl lasts longer.” Compare like with like. Wrap manufacturers themselves generally quote five to seven years outdoors before fading, lifting or edge failure. Mural coating manufacturers publish warranties in the ten to fifteen year range, and a sealed exterior mural routinely outlives that. Indoors both last a long time, and the durability argument stops mattering.
“It costs up to fifty percent less.” On the day of installation, usually true. Over the life of the wall it often is not, because the comparison quietly assumes one purchase. If a wrap is replaced twice in the time a mural is still holding, the cheaper option has been bought three times. And the resale of a wrapped wall is nothing, while a hand-painted wall becomes part of what the building is known for.
The thing the cost comparison misses
Both options put an image on a wall. Only one of them gets photographed. In practice a hand-painted mural earns attention that printed graphics do not: people stop at it, shoot it, tag the location, and post it, and that keeps happening for years after the invoice is paid. That is the entire reason brands commission murals rather than order prints, and it does not show up anywhere in a per-square-foot comparison.
It also reads as commitment. A painted wall says a person spent two weeks on this building. A wrap says a file was sent to a printer. On a flagship location, a headquarters or anywhere the space is the brand, that difference is the whole point.
How to decide in one minute
Ask two questions. How long does this need to live? Under a year, wrap it. Over five years, paint it. And does this wall need to be ours specifically, or just covered? If any competent version of the graphic would do, print it. If the wall is meant to be a reason people notice the building, paint it.

Common questions
Is a hand-painted mural more expensive than a vinyl wrap?
Up front, usually yes, particularly on large flat interior walls where vinyl is at its most efficient. Over the life of the wall the gap narrows or reverses, because outdoor wraps are typically quoted at five to seven years while a sealed exterior mural holds for ten to twenty.
How long does a hand-painted mural last outdoors?
Ten to twenty years when it is painted with UV-resistant exterior product and sealed with a protective coating. Without that specification, far less. The coating is not optional on an exterior wall.
What happens if a mural gets tagged?
With an anti-graffiti coating, the tag is washed off and the artwork underneath is unharmed. Without one, the section has to be repainted. This is the single strongest argument for coating an exterior mural, and it is also why registering a mural with the City of Los Angeles can be worth doing.
Can a mural be painted on brick or textured walls?
Yes. Brick, stucco, block, concrete, metal and curved surfaces are all paintable. This is a real advantage over vinyl, which needs a smooth flat surface to adhere reliably and tends to fail at texture and edges.
Which is faster?
Vinyl, clearly. It is printed off site and installed in hours. A mural takes days to weeks on site, plus design time beforehand. If the deadline is genuinely days away, wrap it.
Do you ever recommend vinyl?
Yes, and we say so rather than take the job: identical graphics across many locations, campaigns lasting under a year, deadlines measured in days, exact photographic reproduction, or a budget below our $7,500 minimum.
